Week 4 Media Blog Forum

Topic 1: NPPA Code of Ethics.

1. Resist being manipulated by staged photo opportunities.
Before this class, I did not see a need in why we should not stage photos until I saw how much people can act differently than they normally might. If you ask someone to take their picture because they looked like they were super concentrated on a certain task, they might smile or have just a slightly different facial expression that could mess up the photo(s).

2. Strive to be unobtrusive and humble in dealing with subjects.
This stood out to me most because you should in no way belittle the person(s) you're taking the photo of, it is rude and depending on if you said or did something that offended them, they might not want to do any business with you later on. I think unobtrusive would be referring to like if you're taking photos in something like a science classroom, don't be up in people's faces distracting them because they could as a creeper and it would change the emotions that could be captured in the photo.

3. Be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects. Avoid stereotyping individuals and groups. Recognize and work to avoid presenting one's own biases in the work.
This rule can be hard because not every single person will be 100% unbiased about a person or their work. This but trying to capture who they really are as a person can help you empathize with that person. For example, if I went to Wal-Mart and started taking pictures of people, I am sure just by looking how the person is dressed and what car they drive, you can tell how they would react if they saw you taking pictures of them. Some man dressed in a suit and getting out of a Mercedes might just give you a nod a maybe a smirk. But the guy that just got out of the 1984 Buick Lesabre dressed in a tanktop, sweatpants, and flipflops might not offer that same smirk and friendly nod.

Topic 2: Favorite classmate photos.

This picture from Megan is one of my favorite's because the only person in the photo is easy to gravitate towards, and the uncommon view of where the photo was taken, behind a podium, makes it very enjoyable.

Constance's photo of the Space exploration booth pour the liquid nitrogen for the ice cream, is one of my favorite photos. Not just because I really like cream, but I like the way Constance filled the frame with the people not really in the picture.
